Content Description A surgical amputation bow saw with T-shaped hardwood handle and a tongue-shaped grip. Handle has cross-hatched grips and fluted around the edge. A 7/8" diameter hole in center of the handle for inserting index finger. An inverted L-shaped steel bow frame with a 9 1/8" long by 3/4" wide serrated blade mounted at bottom. Thumb screw at nose of bow to adjust tension on the blade and a second screw on lower left of handle to allow removal of the blade. Handle is cracked at the top. Left side of bow is stamped "H. HERNSTEIN/393 BROADWAY/NEW YORK." Saw measures 16" long by 4 1/8" high and 9/16" thick. Housed in case GETT 470. Used by Surgeon James Chapman, 123d NY Infantry. Steel surgical instrument, 5 3/4" long. Ivory multi-colored handle and chamferred edges terminating in a rounded end. Steel hook 2 3/4" long is rounded throughout and has an oblong "eye" or hole near the end of the hook. Housed in case GETT 470. Used by Surgeon James Chapman, 123d NY Infantry. A metal bronze-colored surgical instrument known as a trephine for boring holes in human skull. Overall length 4" with a 3" long shaft and 1 1/8" diameter collar that holds a cylindrical serrated blade 15/16" wide by 13/16" in diameter. Blade has a 5/8" wide band of saw teeth and is secured to the collar with 3 screws. An adjustable 3-sided center bit inside serrated blade with adjustable thumb screw located on shaft. Used in conjuction with handle GETT 501: Black hardwood handle for a trephine, 4 1/16" long, with a squared center section. Ends of handle are rounded and shaped like a bottle neck tapering to 2 rows of raised beading. Center section has a square hole 1/4" x 1/4" cut through 2 sides with all 4 sides being cross-hatched. Housed in case GETT 470. Used by Surgeon James Chapman, 123d NY Infantry.
